WHO
Emergent Music LLC's first offering is Goombah -- a free application that recommends music uniquely suited to a user's taste and provides a new promotional model for artists.
WHAT
Goombah, a free online application for music discovery, is a web-based service using a unique methodology to deliver the best recommendations to music lovers. Building on information from its desktop application launched in late 2006, Goombah analyzes the music and play patterns in music libraries to determine what mix of music people really like. Rather than analyzing components of tracks or linking similar artists together, Goombah uses the music taste of thousands of clusters of real people to make recommendations. The result is recommendations that are less predictable and more relevant. With more than 16 million tracks in user libraries, the music discovered with Goombah is targeted and full of delightful surprises – not just more of the same. Users enjoy a great listening experience playing the full-length of recommended tracks.
Free music is also targeted to users based on their taste. Goombah’s Free Music catalog currently contains nearly 10,000 tracks sourced from labels. Users can play their recommendations radio-style, save playlists and download the tracks they like.
Goombah builds knowledge of each new user’s musical taste based on their selections, plays and rankings. Power users can let Goombah look at their music library to get the most precise recommendations right out of the gate.
Goombah has a proprietary taste-based content server that precisely delivers music and related content to individuals based on their music taste. Users get content they are interested in such as articles and new music releases from artists they have or are apt to like, and the advertiser gets to reach his/her audience directly and efficiently. Goombah has signed agreements with more than a dozen leading music content providers including Paste, Popmatters and Blueswax to serve their content to Goombah users based on musical taste.
WHEN
The Goombah desktop application was initially launched in November 2006. Goombah Radio and member profiles, among other products, were added to the web, and the number of unique tracks in members' collections has grown from 2 million to more than 16 million in one year. In February 2008, a new version of Goombah was released on the web.
WHERE
Based in Maine, Emergent Music was founded by a group of veteran technology and music industry executives.
